Help Save Nami-Usagi, A 120-Year-Old Japanese Historical Plaster Relief Sculpture on the Wall of a Japanese Kura
—
Early in the morning on July 7th, 2018, two landslides caused by the Western Japan Heavy Rain left severe damage to our family homes in Uwajima City. Fortunately, nobody was at the houses at the time, but on that day, we lost these 120-year-old dwellings forever. The main building was a former sericulture house, built during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) and connected to a warehouse built around the time of the Sino-Japanese War (1894-1895). These historically significant buildings were severely flooded and are scheduled to be demolished in November 2019.
It is difficult for our family to see these cherished buildings go. Not just because we grew up with them, but because they are a part of Japanese culture and history. We wish to save or reuse anything we can take from the buildings, and fulfill that wish, we ask for your help.
Konke “Nami-Usagi” Project
According to old documents we found in the Kura (蔵), the white wall storage house, the name of Konke(紺家) was a business name for our Seike family when sericulture was a huge business back in the late 19 century. We thought it suits perfectly as the name of this project as we are still in business.
Kote-e (鏝絵) is the art style of plastering pictures or words on the walls of traditional Japanese architecture. They often represent a story that invites fortune and the classical themes of the natural beauty of Japanese aesthetics. The design in the picture is called Nami-Usagi (波兎), one of the most well-known motifs used for Kote-e to wish prosperity for the family. These Japanese words consist of the two kanji characters: Nami (波: wave) symbolizes fire prevention, and Usage (兎: rabbit) represents fertility and prosperity.
